"Where in that description is evidence of "inspired" leadership rather than
good leadership? Also, they would say that wouldn't they? It's the company
song."
Good managers manage risks. Great managers see opportunities and take
action. In the matter of the environment and in Detroit, two related
problems we need more action perhaps more than continued discussion. But we
also need continued discussion. The Prius is an example of inspired
leadership. The technological leaders in the car industry like BMW were
afraid to take that step.It needed vision and courage and managers who can
take action. The information to take positive action existed in Detroit
seven years ago but the Managers at GM didn't take action. They had their
heads in the sand. The companies that grow like Apple depend on great
leadership to grow but it is not the only factor. There needs to be value
and action right down the chain.
Kevin Hunter the President of Toyota's Calty Research, a CCS alumni who was
one of the people I mentioned in the last posting told me he joined Toyota
when they developed their first Celica model because he felt that they were
beginning to show some independent vision that their competitors were not.
I would prefer to live in a UK with a great Prime Minister than a good Prime
Minister.I believe in leadership as much a I believe in education. Success
depends on both.
