I'm glad to know we are not alone in using item level holds. Despite
occasional problems when the patron who has a recalled item does not
return the item and the requester is inconvenienced, my understanding is
that item level holds are recommended if you have patrons/copies with
very different loan periods and if you have remote branches and shipping
items to fulfil holds to/from these branches is not practical.
Unfortunately hold management in Millennium has much scope for enhancements.

This would mean that the reserver gets the copy returned soonest rather than whichever copy they've clicked on in the OPAC. However concerns have been raised that this might cause confusion and delays.
