Hi Ian
We also use bib level holds at Edge Hill for all the reasons given by
other colleagues (and we do get the odd complaint that they did not want
a one week loan book) However we also have another reason why we could
not offer item level holds. We allow all students to place holds on
available items as long as they (the readers) are not actually in the
LRC. Our picking list has between 100 and 200 items a day on it and if
the staff member had to actually find the specific item… You can imagine
we sometime have 15 copies of a health book sitting on the shelves

Subject: Bib and item-based holds
Hi,
We're reviewing our lending policies and its been suggested that we
move to using bib-based rather than item-based holds. This would mean
that the reserver gets the copy returned soonest rather than whichever
copy they've clicked on in the OPAC. However concerns have been raised
that this might cause confusion and delays.
As a quick straw poll, I'd be interested in knowing who in the UK
uses
which type of holds. Especially useful would be if anybody has switched
from one type to the other, and if so why?
Thanks,
Ian
