Hi Ian,
We use bib level holds. Our main reason for this is it is easier to say to the user that whichever copy is returned first is the one that will satisfy their hold. The other problem which we identified when deciding on bib or item level holds is that with item level holds if someone kept hold of the particular copy chosen to fulfil the hold rather than return it, the user who had placed the hold would be disadvantaged as other copies that were returned before the particular copy chosen would not fill the hold. This was what happened with our short loan collection which was bookable and working on item level not bib level.
Hope this makes sense and is helpful.
Regards,
Emma

Subject: Bib and item-based holds
Hi,
We're reviewing our lending policies and its been suggested that we
move to using bib-based rather than item-based holds. This would mean
that the reserver gets the copy returned soonest rather than whichever
copy they've clicked on in the OPAC. However concerns have been raised
that this might cause confusion and delays.
As a quick straw poll, I'd be interested in knowing who in the UK uses
which type of holds. Especially useful would be if anybody has switched
from one type to the other, and if so why?
Thanks,
Ian
