'Deutsch: Lehren und Lernen' is published twice a year by the Association for
Language Learning. As suggested by its sub-title, ‘The journal for teachers of
German at all levels’, it includes much which is of interest to university
Germanists. Recent issues have contained articles by a number of colleagues
at universities: Bill Niven (Nottingham Trent), Peter Hutchinson (Cambridge),
Tony Bushell (Bangor), and me (Leicester). Each issue contains a News and
Notes section, with topical information from Germany for use in teaching
(including internet references), and a Reviews section. In autumn 2009 the
Reviews section will include a review by Ritchie Robertson (Oxford) of the
Festschrift for Ron Speirs (Birmingham).
Topics covered recently in 'Deutsch: Lehren und Lernen' include:
developments in Swiss German; teaching a reading knowledge of German to
postgraduates and researchers; attitudes to the Nazi past in Germany today;
teaching Judith Hermann’s 'Sommerhaus, spater'; using Ernst Jandl’s poems in
class. Full lists of the contents of all back issues can be viewed by going to
