MRC Funded PhD Studentships at the MRC Midland Hub for Trials Methodology Research at the University of Birmingham
The Midland Hub for Trials Methodology Research based at the University of Birmingham is one of a national network of seven hubs funded as an exciting new initiative by the Medical Research Council. As a centre of excellence for trials methodology research, we provide local and national researchers undertaking trials with innovative methodology for design, conduct and analysis, thereby improving quality of trials and ultimately patient care.
The Midland Hub has five four-year Medical Research Council PhD studentships available to start in 2009 at the University of Birmingham. PhD studentships will be offered to outstanding graduates who wish to pursue a career in clinical trials, health care evaluation and research.
PhD students will have the opportunity to undertake a relevant MSc followed by 3 years of PhD research. Three projects are available from the Hub's specialist methodological areas:
(1) Evidence synthesis of diagnostic and prognostic biomarker studies: development of statistical models using individual patient data (Supervisors: Professor Jon Deeks and Dr Richard Riley)
(2) Investigating the potential of grouped frailty models to describe centre effects in multi-centre trials in which survival is an outcome (Supervisors: Professor Nick Freemantle and Dr Melanie Calvert)
(3) Health informatics: integrating clinical data with clinical trial data (Supervisors: Dr Adel Taweel, Dr Theodoros Arvanitis and Professor Brendan Delaney)
For further information and one page summaries of these projects, please see http://www.haps.bham.ac.uk/education/student_recruitment_advert.shtml
We are seeking applications from individuals who have a background in trials methodology, medical statistics, health care evaluation, health informatics or other relevant area. The studentships will be supervised by Hub members who are leading experts in trial methodology.
The studentships will cover full fees for EU students, a research training support grant and conference allowance, and a basic stipend of £15,000 per annum. Applicants from outside the EU are equally invited to apply, and the studentships will be offered strictly on the basis of academic merit. Non EU students will receive pro rata reductions on the stipend received due to the higher course fees.
