Very true Tim. I have done a rough calculation of all the meetings/conferences/seminars that I could have attended in the last twelve months on Point of Care Testing, commissioning and the PCTs, Darzi, Carter etc and it has come to a nifty £2500 in course fees alone. Add in accommodation, travel etc and that takes care of the departmental budget and then some. I totally agree with your suggestion that some of these meetings could be held on NHS premises for a reasonable fee.
Perhaps if we boycotted some of these meetings and put the money to better use the message might get through. Oh, and if you do attend one of these marketing company organised jamborees, be prepared to be inundated with fliers and e-mails for more of the same.
