Ross, I've been dealing with this issues a lot lately, because I was working
on my thesis about Mockumentary, documentary and truth. Very useful for me
was Stella Bruzzi: New Documentary: A Critical Introduction , especially her
introduction and chapter The event: archive and newsreel. Is strongly
recommend it.

She is one of rare authors that I have found that didn't abolish the idea
that there is truth to be found in documentary, even if this truth is not
"the thing it self".
