Ariane, I've just had a very nice conversation with Bill Mason at the
PaleoBond company. They make an array of adhesives and plastic clays for
museum workers. I'm not sure if he has a product such as you seem to be
seeking, but I know he could direct you.
I had not used PaleoBond stuff previously, by the way, but had a need
during my visit last month to the K.U. Museum to stabilize tooth enamel
that had begun to spall on some older (recent) specimens, with checkering,
tips of teeth breaking off, etc. Dave Burnham, our museum Vert. Paleo.
preparator, clued me onto this PaleoBond stuff and I quite fell in love
with it. It comes in various viscosities -- I was using the "100" grade
which is about like conventional "super glue", i.e. fairly thin, so as to
penetrate well. Using a bottle with a teeney nozzle attached, you run a
drop of it into the alveolus, or touch it to a crack in the tooth itself,
and it runs in by capillary action. Then, what just tickled me to death,
is you have a pump-spray bottle of another chemical, which if you spray it
on there while the glue is wet, sets the glue instantly -- it just freezes
solid. I would think that archaeologists with the problem of
reconstructing broken pots, not to mention fractured skulls, would
absolutely love this stuff -- it almost eliminates the need for a sandbox.
Just one caution on it, though -- the freezer chemical instantly dissolves
"permanent" marker ink, so if your specimens are labeled with this
otherwise indelible ink, put a piece of tape over the number before
spraying.
Anyway, their website is predictably www.paleobond.com, and Maston's phone
number is (612) 840-7139. Cheers -- Deb Bennett
