Now that's what I call a scholarly act! Thanks Klaus.
To everybody. Don't just point to some journal article that might or
might not be in the other person's library, make an effort to put your
work into an open-access repository, many universities have them now. We
will all benefit but especially you. If your university does not have
one use archive.org (more about that soon)
And publish in open-access journals and conferences where you can, like
the excellent International Journal of Design. We are still too seduced
by the printed page which has become a profit machine for academic
publishers who exploit unpaid reviewers to help them get a stranglehold
on the results of publicly funded research and privilege the few in
well-resourced universities against the many in poorer countries who
cannot afford the subscriptions (not to mention the public who paid for
your work in various ways)
DRS is committed to making its conference proceedings open-access, as is
IASDR. Our last two proceedings are online at
http://www.iade.pt/drs2006/wonderground/proceedings/index.html
http://www3.shu.ac.uk/Conferences/DRS/Index.htm
But we still find ourselves struggling against the book fetish (The Book
fetish?) and the way it can distort the priorities of otherwise rational
beings. Books are wonderful but they should be written as books by
authors and editors with something to say, not compiled by scavengers.
Incidentally, it's usually completely allowable to place a preprint of a
published paper in an open-access archive. Almost every academic
publisher allows this and there's an excellent online resource that
explains all that (just type in the name of your journal to see what
they allow):

As you can see, I'm passionate about this.
best
Chris
