medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Ms B M Cook <[log in to unmask]>
> Does anyone know if an edition of the Letters of Peter the Venerable, Abbot
of Cluny was published before Migne brought out vol 189 of the "Patrologia
Latina" in 1854 ?
the answer to this, seems to me, must be a definite Yes.
for the simple reason that (correct me if i'm wrong, someone) Migne did not
"edit" anything --in the sense of going back to the mss and arriving at a text
by careful (or not) collation, etc.
*all* of Migne's "editions" are based on previously published ones, largely
those which were the work of the Maurists, but many others as well (esp. for
the more obscure authors, of which PV is not, presumably, one).
the "front matter" in the PL ed. frequently consists of prefaces to the
previous edition which is being reprinted (with a set of entirely new typos
being introduced), the original critical notes and annotations are frequently
there as well as (usually) some kind of "new" preface added by Migne himself
or one of his Multiplicty of Minions...
so, you should have the answer to your question in the front matter of his ed.
of P the V.
> I could find nothing earlier in the Catalogue of the British Library nor on
COPAC. On the other hand, a "search" of the BL general catalogue under P the V
did not show up the Vol. in the PL either!
well, the BL Catalogue....what can i say?
> I do not have a copy of the Giles Constable edition to check the
bibliography.
mine's at home, miles away.
there's a Nearly Worthless "snippet view" available on books.google.com
http://books.google.com/books?id=eiqGAAAAIAAJ&dq=inauthor:giles+inauthor:constable&lr=&as_brr=0&as_pt=ALLTYPES&pgis=1
"printed editions" [plural] is mentioned on p. 92
http://books.google.com/books?lr=&as_brr=0&as_pt=ALLTYPES&id=eiqGAAAAIAAJ&dq=inauthor%3Agiles+inauthor%3Aconstable&q=previous+editions&pgis=1
and it looks like he deals with "Printed Editions" in extentio on pp. 45-8 of
his introduction:
http://books.google.com/books?lr=&as_brr=0&as_pt=ALLTYPES&id=eiqGAAAAIAAJ&dq=inauthor%3Agiles+inauthor%3Aconstable&q=printed+editions&pgis=1
if you knew the name of the editor of one of the previously printed editions,
you could maybe find a "snippet view" of part of the page where he is
mentioned....
