Hello
I would agree entirely but I am rather a pedant on such matters. The problem
with the apostrophe nowadays though seems rather to be "If in doubt put it
in!". Thus the deluge of printed material with "it's" used as a possessive,
even in teachers' handouts. Then of course there is the mania for using an
apostrophe whenever there's a plural. Don't get me started!

Hello,
I am a new subscriber to MASSOBS, having just discovered it via Simon
Garfield`s excellent book.
I am appalled by by the current thinking on the use/misuse of the
apostrophe -
it seems to be " If in doubt, leave it out!!" Why can`t English grammar be
taught properly these days? Or indeed ANY kind of grammar. I remember
conjugating French verbs for five years before I was allowed to be
considered
good enough to sit French "O" Level. Nowadays it seems to have dwindled to
mere conversational French, just enough to get by on a daytrip. And as for
poor English grammar, that seems to have been reduced to textspeak. Let us
all sing out for our dear apostrophe or it will be lost for ever.
What do other subscribers think ? I`d love to know.
