The Department of Statistics, BioImaging group, at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich invites applications for a
Doctoral / Research Assistant position
in Spatial Statistics / BioImaging
with effect of April 1, 2009, or as soon as possible. The applicant will work in the BioImaging group, part of the LMUinnovativ project “Analysis and Modelling of Complex Systems in Biology and Medicine”. The group is concerned with applications of statistical methods for biological and medical imaging. Innovative technologies in bioimaging, such as advanced light microscopy, and in medical imaging, such as functional MRI or perfusion imaging, call for methods from statistics and bioinformatics as well as for novel spatio-temporal models to visualize, analyze and model processes in systems biology and systems physiology at a high resolution.
The applicant will develop and apply advanced models and inferential tools for problems arising in processing 3d- and 4d images, with applications in optical bioimaging as well as in dynamic medical imaging. Ideas and tools from spatial statistics and Bayesian inference will play an important role. Statistical approaches for the analysis of imaging data will be developed in cooperation with national and international partners.
Requirements: The applicant is expected to hold an MSc degree, either in statistics or in mathematics, computer science, engineering or a similar discipline with a strong statistical component. Skills in a programming language (e.g. C, C++), and in statistical/mathematical software packages (e.g. R) are essential. Knowledge of spatial statistics, Bayesian inference and/or MCMC is preferred.
Offer: Salary is according to TV-L EG 13 (50%). Your main duties will be to perform research and analysis within the project. You will be given an opportunity to develop your teaching skills as well.
