University of Southampton
Lectureship in Statistical Methods
Applications are invited for a Lectureship in Statistical Methods in the fields of Advanced
Statistical Modelling or Design of Experiments, as part of 14 appointments in the new
EPSRC-funded national Centre for Advanced Tribology at Southampton (nCATS). This post
is a joint appointment between Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI)
and the School of Engineering Sciences (SES).
Tribology is the interdisciplinary science and technology of all interacting surfaces and
interfaces in relative motion and is core to the development of future transport and
energy efficient machines, the health and quality of life of patients, the control of
emissions and lower maintenance costs. nCATS aims to provide the next generation
underpinning technology within Microsystems, Biomedical Engineering, Engineering and
Engineering Chemistry. It has strong links with industry, including 25 industrial partners,
and an active technology transfer agenda.
nCATS was established during 2008 at the University of Southampton, within SES in
collaboration with S3RI and the Schools of Electronics and Computer Science, Biological
Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry and Medicine. More information is available at
www.soton.ac.uk/ses/research/nCATS.
You will develop and manage multi-disciplinary research projects between the
collaborating Schools and will have a real commitment to working with engineers and
tribologists. They will have access to facilities and mentoring from senior staff within
S3RI and SES.
For this lectureship, you should have a growing international research reputation, an
excellent research background in developing statistical methods and applying them to
problems in science or engineering, proven ability to win research income, and an
excellent publication record.
Salary will be in the range £34,435 to £43,622.
Informal enquiries about this position may be made to Professor Sue Lewis

The post is available from 1 October 2009, or as soon as possible thereafter. Interviews
are planned for various dates towards the end of March or the end of April.
There will also be a position for a Post Doctoral Research Fellow in Statistical Methods
advertised in the near future. To be alerted about this vacancy, please email
