We have just finished a full evaluation with the NICU. We led it and spent a
lot of time on it. We developed a form that every nurse had to fill in
looking at the baby's skin colour light, medium or dark, gestational age and
weeks of age. The coordinator had to enter all of the data including the
nurses' code and lab result for the 100 baabies we looked at. We ended up
with many positive outcomes.
1) the nurses and Chief of the NICU began to understand our role and
expertise
2) everyone was saw the amount of work the POCT coordinator did
3) they saw the error was plus or minus 30%
4) they are now deciding if they want it and what to use as a cut off before
they do a serum bilirubin before discharge home of "normal" babies
We are a much closer team now and our roles and expertise are beginning to
be understood.

Subject: Non-Invasive Bilirubinometers
Dear Colleagues
We have been approached by our NNU for advice on the use of non-invasive
bilirubinometers so I was wondering if anyone has experience with their use
in this setting.
If so could you let me know how much involvement the POCT has in training
and maintenance of such analysers, and any general feedback on their use.
All comments welcome
Kind regards
Helen
