This is advanced notice of a NERC fully funded PhD studentship that will be advertised shortly. We hope to have a student in place to start the project in the near future (start date to be confirmed). The eligibility criteria indicate that full fees will only be paid to a UK student (see below). If you are interested please keep an eye out for the forthcoming full advertisement and further details or bring this to the attention of suitable candidates.
Unfortunately I will only be able to answer detailed enquiries once the start date is confirmed and the full advertisement is posted.
Thanks,
Jacqui
Details
A fully funded PhD studentship 'Diversification and Sustainability in Ancient Coastal Communities: The Role of Marine Resources' has been recently awarded to Cardiff University as part of the Bristol University lead project 'Changing Patterns of Marine Product Exploitation in Human Prehistory via Biomarker Proxies in Archaeological Pottery' with Richard Evershed as Principle Investigator.
The studentship supervised by Dr Jacqui Mulville will be highly complementary to that proposed in the main research project but with an emphasis on zooarchaeological analyses supplemented by stable isotope analyses of skeletal remains. Four specific lines of investigation will be pursed
1. Palaeoeconomic analyses of the zooarchaeological assemblages from a range of sites from the Hebrides and Northern Isles (Neolithic to Norse) allowing the contribution of marine and terrestrial species to the diet to be assessed.
2. Investigation of zooarchaeological evidence for food processing, preparation, cooking of foods and off-site processing and/or consumption in the light of potential archaeological (in)visibility of dietary components.
3. Stable isotope analyses, of human and faunal remains where appropriate, to supplement data provided by the parallel project.
4. Comparison of these data with residue analyses of ceramics, undertaken by the main project, for supplementary evidence for the degree of marine exploitation and to inform on the relationship between these lines of evidence.
Eligibility as defined by NERC website.
PhD
If you have a 2.1 degree or higher, you are a UK citizen and you have always lived in the UK you are eligible to apply. If you have a 2.2 degree, but have also obtained a masters qualification, you are also eligible.
Experience
If you do not have these qualifications but you have substantial relevant post-graduate experience you may be eligible. It will be the responsibility of the department holding the studentship to determine whether your relevant experience is sufficient.
UK and EU residents
If you have not always lived in the UK refer to the NERC Studentships Handbook, section B for more information.
If you are a citizen of a European Union (EU) member state you will generally be eligible for a fees-only award. Please refer to the full list of EU countries and further eligibility information in Section B of the Studentships Handbook. As of July 2005 non-UK EU nationals who have spent the previous three years in the UK undertaking education (undergraduate study or masters) now meet the residency requirements for full postgraduate studentship support. Previously residence for the purpose of full time education was excluded by the eligibility criteria.
If you have indefinite leave to remain in the United Kingdom, or Humanitarian Protection, or Discretionary Leave see the NERC Studentships Handbook, section titled "Indefinite Leave to Remain", Section B, for further details and definition of this term. If you do not you are probably not eligible for a NERC award.
