Hi Lynn

Thank you for this - I've been waiting for these 2008 conference proceedings
to be posted! Most certainly I would like to discuss this with you - if you
will allow me to come back to you once I have digested this work?

Kind regards

Stephen

Hi Stephen

I don't know anything about SafeAssign but there's a fascinating article on
Turnitin (peer review function) by Ledwith and Risquez (2008, Studies in
Higher Education) and there were several excellent papers on using Turnitin
as a teaching tool at the JISC/N-Learning 2008 Plagiarism conference . At a
less exalted level, I've been trialling Turnitin as a teaching aid for three
semesters (including one semester using the online assessment/feedback
function GradeMark) with my international (EFL) students and would be happy
to discuss if it helps.

And a Happy New Year to you also Mike.

My reasons? I am writing up my MA dissertation on the use of plagairism
detection software as a teaching tool (as opposed to a big stick). I am
aware of the differences, but can't find anything in the literature which
would be good to include. All very simple and no hidden agenda!

Happy New Year! Can I play Devil's Advocate a bit and ask your
reasoning? Presumably your institution has made this decision
primarily on cost grounds. In which case any comparison is futile, as
TurnitinUk is no longer free; and never was really because it was
funded by JISC. My own pretty anecdotal view is you get what you pay
for - including the training and support - or in your case, maybe you
don't. Your comment "free (to Blackboard users)" is indicative. What
might me really useful to fellow list subscribers would be an account
by you of your experiences with this bolt on option to Blackboard, as
Service ( a deliberate emphasis on the S) is what is critical for you,
beyond any technical comparison with other detection packages.

Mike
