A query came through to me today along the following lines (we use TII through the WebCT powerlink):
A student had mistakenly uploaded a paper meant for a TII Assignmemt with a deadline of today to on that had a deadline of 10th December 2008 (multiple and late submissions both allowed). Once she realised her mistake she then uploaded the paper to the correct TII Assignment and, quite rightly, got a 100% match to the paper she uploaded to the TII Assignment where the deadline had passed - from this I deduce the paper had been committed to the student database. In trying to put things right, she tried to upload the correct paper to the TII Assignment with the December deadline, only to get a message saying as an originality report had already been generated for this assignment she couldn't upload a different version unless her tutor deleted the one that was there.
I've now got a few questions:
1) The student had already uploaded a paper to the December dealine assignment and I assume the papers would already have had their originalty reports re-run and have been committed to the student database (post date had also passed a few days after the assignment deadline). If this had all happened, shouldn't TII have prevented her uploading another version of a paper to the December assignment once the deadline had passed in the first place? Is there a bug here?
2) If I delete an assignment that's already been committed to the database of student papers, will the paper be completely deleted from the database or, more simply, will the link between the TII Assignment and the database be severed, leaving the paper in the database?
3)If I delete the paper that was wrongly submitted to the December assignment and the student re-uploads her original paper, will she get a false positive matching this 'new' paper to her original submission as it's still in the databse somewhere?
I'm particularly interested to know whether anyone else has had a similar experience and whether Turnitin has allowed a student to upload another paper once the deadline for a Turnitin Assignment has passed, as has happened here.
Best wishes,
Ali
