We've not been using Turnitin all that long and one of our students has noticed a difference between the word count he gets in MS Word and the word count he gets at the top of his originality report. I'm guessing this is because Turnitin handles hyphenated words and things like 'e.g' as separate words when MS Word counts them as single entities.
Does that sound right?
