Regarding Erik's request for works comparing design paradigms - Shanna Daly (currently a PostDoc at U Michigan) did her thesis work comparing design across disciplines. It was a phenomenographical study that included engineers, chemists, artists, etc. talking about their experiences with design. Her particular goal was to understand the ways in which design is a shared domain across diverse disciplinary views.

She has some papers out - and is currently working on more - but I encourage all who are interested to contact her ([log in to unmask]).

Shanna - hope you don't mind me spreading the word :)

Thank you for the responses so far. It seems I have managed to mislead some
list members into thinking that making my dissertation available in response
to their requests is a major undertaking. It is not. The file is about 20Mb
and the access is via a standard download. So, please do not hesitate to
request if interested.

Subject: Re: Comparative Design Research Sources?

Hi Erik,
In the late 90s' I developed a comparative tool for comprehensively
analysing the theory structures of design paradigms (the meta-theoretical
analytical design tool) which is published on my website (www.love.com.au)
and in Design Studies in 2000 and 2002 plus a paper in the La Clusaz
conference and is also described with all the supporting analyses in my
book. The papers and book demonstrate the use of the tool through worked
examples comparing two different design paradigms.
Cheers,
Terry

Dear list,

I am looking for studies that have compared dominating design process
paradigms in different disciplines, especially different engineering
disciplines, product design, architecture, and interaction design. I
am mostly interested in empirical studies (but anything will do :-)

I am especially interested in studies where the foundational design
philosophy and methodology for several disciplines are defined,
analyzed and compared.

If you have any good references, please let me know. Send off list and
I will compile and send out to the list.

Thanks
Erik

NORDES 2009 Extended deadline and call for papers

Announcement and 3. call for submissions:
Nordic Design Research Conference

NORDES =B409 Engaging Artefacts
www.nordes.org

Oslo, Norway, 30 August -1 September 2009

Design research aims to provide new insights to the ways in which we
understand =96 and do =96 design. The conference invites contributions =
from
researchers in universities, design schools and industry who share an
interest in understanding and developing design as a trans-disciplinary
practice that is always in the making. The scope of the conference =20
reaches
beyond the traditional design disciplines and includes other research
areas with mutual interest in design research and engaging artefacts.
NORDES =9109 directs its interest towards the diversity, challenges and
emerging practices and understandings of design. The conference theme
reflects a range of issues that characterize design and design research
today.

Confronted with the increasingly complex problems of our times, design
should engage in new ways of thinking. Design objects are =20
characterized by
their form, aesthetics, functionality, materials as well as social,
political and cultural codings. How do and might designers, and =20
educators
and researchers of design respond to these different perspectives in
design? How can designers respond to the life cycle of artefacts? How =20=

can
designers be better at designing artefacts for performability and
sustainability? How do designers and researchers develop ways of
researching knowledges, skills, theories, methods, intuition and passion
in design practices?
In addressing these many issues, the Engaging Artefacts conference
includes the following themes:
- Consumption: critical perspectives on the increasing number and
diversity of artefacts and their creative design but also use and =20
abuse in
global economy
- Production: critical perspectives on the complexity, interrelations =20=

and
consequences of production
- Technology: new forms given by new materials =96 and new materials
developed to enable new forms
- Interactivity: performance and system oriented thinking regarding the
interaction between artefacts, material systems, environments and users
- Politics: the role of artefacts in shaping alternative futures
especially addressing accessibility, sustainability, poverty and =20
democracy

So as to fully take up the theme Engaging Artefacts, we invite a =20
range of
contributions:
- Research papers (full paper - maximum 10 pages)
- Exploratory papers (maximum 4 pages)
- Doctoral consortium (maximum 4 pages proposal)
- Design cases (maximum 2 pages proposals)
- Artefacts for exhibition (maximum 2 page proposals)
- Tutorials (maximum 2 page proposals)
- Workshops (maximum 2 page proposals)

Submitted contributions are subject to an anonymous peer-review process.
Accepted contributions will be published electronically on the =20
conference
website prior to the conference and in the conference proceedings.

Important dates:
23 February 2009: Extended deadline for all papers (including design
cases, artefacts, tutorials, workshops)
2 April 2009: Feedback to authors and organisers with suggestions for
revision
1 June 2009: Final paper submissions uploaded to website

Subject: U.S. National Design Policy Initiative

Hello All,

I don't know how many on this list might have heard about the US National=
Design Policy Initiative (http://designpolicy.org), which grew out of th=
e National Design Summit of November 08. The summit group published a rep=
ort containing 10 policy proposals that they have circulated in the highe=
st levels of government, including Mr. O. I've looked the document over a=
nd find it disappointing, for the reasons mentioned in this critique, htt=
p://designactivism.net/archives/150

I'm interested in hearing what other people think about it, perhaps off-l=
ist or over at designactivism.net would be the appropriate place?

Thanks,

Ann
