Interesting question!
In the Swaledale/Wensleydale, I can only think of two examples from the 19th
cent which haven't run in. Both are on Redmire/Preston Moor (lead shafts). I
assume that they were sunk as rectangles and divided by masonry (circular),
in both cases the climbing way is on the east side. There are two others still
open in Swaledale, late 18thc, which were oval with masonry at the top, one
seems to have been seperated by stemples and boarding down the middle
(east/west).
