With metal mines, I would consider that the bearing of the lode would have
an influence on the positioning of the shaft - rectangular anyway. Whenever one
sees p.graphs of u/g coal mine shaft stations, the rectangular shaft section
is always across the 'way' - indeed it is nearly always the case anywhere as
we know. Much would depend on the surveyors and the planning of the mine
(for a new shaft/mine), but with a new shaft at an existing mine, the angle of
the rectangle would depend on the levels it was going to meet.
