On the positive side: Northamptonshire Central Library hosted the recent launch event for SHARING THE PAST: Northamptonshire Black History, and the Northants library service has purchased copies of our book for all the county's libraries as well as taking copies to sell from local libraries. NBHA quarterly newsletters are also distributed free of charge through all Northamptonshire libraries. The Central Library in Northampton has a reasonable holding of Black British History books, which has been useful to local students of this subject (not everything we would like, of course). The former Northamptonshire Local Studies Librarian was an NBHA Director - which helped! His replacement is also an active NBHA supporter and committee member.

Marika's suggestion of a conversation with the Librarian's Association is a good one. This can go on the BASA Committee agenda.
Are there any members of the Librarian's Association on BASAJISC who would like to email me direct (not via BASAJISC) to let me know their personal views of issues in Libraries. My impression is that in many Council libraries books have been run down in favour of IT, DVDs, records, etc; and that constant budget cuts and reorganisations can be demoralising, loss historica memory among staff, and lead to more inward looking rather than developing an outreach role, and promoting library venues as places for learning activities. My email is [log in to unmask]
Does anyone else have similar experiences to those of Stephen?
Given many local studies sections are part of libraries, what happens in Cocuncil libraries is very important to BASA in terms of ensuring that Black and Asian Heritage enquiries can be dealt with properly.

Stephen is not the only one who has not been thanked by London boroughs for donations of books - another example is Kensington/Chelsea and Hammersmith, who were sent copies of the new book on Cuffay.
Perhaps it is time, as it is eons ago that we last had a 'conversation' with the Librarians Association, for us to ask for a meeting.
