John Sella Martin, minister and abolitionist

Education: Martin taught himself to read and write and used those skills and his employment
as a boatman on the Mississippi River to escape.
Key details: In an eighteen-year period John Sella Martin was sold eight times. Martin
developed a reputation as a powerful orator and militant antislavery speaker who endorsed
slave insurrections. He traveled to Europe to raise money for the Union and eventually took
