Sorry - I thought you were only asking about the water level at
Manchester, which is why I referred to the line to it from Worsley -
which includes, by the way (since the Ship Canal was built) the
wonderful Barton swing-aqueduct. There is also a lock on the
Bridgewater Canal near Leigh, going north to Wigan.
