OSLO NATIONAL ACADEMY OF THE ARTS
Oslo National Academy of the Arts is the largest educational institution
for designers and artists in the country. In the future, approximately 200
practising and creative artists and designers will be educated at three
new faculties.
The academy's activities include education, research and art and design
development. The academy also acts as a link between the main areas of
visual arts, dramatic art and design. The institution is a merger between
the Norwegian National Academy of Fine Arts, the Norwegian State College
of Applied Arts and Crafts, the State Academy of Theatre, the State
Academy of Opera and the State Academy of Ballet. Oslo National Academy of
the Arts offers degrees at both Bachelor and Masters level. The whole
academy is going to be housed at Seilduksfabrikken, the former sailcloth
factory, which is a magnificent industrial plant from the 1850’s by the
Aker River (Akerselva). The Faculty of Performing Arts and the
administration have already moved into their new premises. The Faculties
of Design and Visual Arts plan to move in during the spring of 2010 at the
next stage of the construction.
The fact that the faculties and the subject areas are brought together
constitutes one of the academy’s most important contributions in terms of
providing the best possible conditions for the development of each
programme. The academy is in a period of development and is striving to
strengthen its identity. Its objective is to further develop its research
within the practice of professional art and design.
The activities are organised in three faculties. Each of the faculties is
directed by a dean who has the academic as well as the financial
administrative responsibility. The head of each individual subject, in
collaboration with the director of studies and the dean, has the
responsibility for the different programmes within the faculties.
The Faculty of Design
The Faculty of Design offers visual communication, interior architecture
and furniture design as well as fashion design and costume design. The
faculty has a target number of 137students.
DEAN (FIXED-TERM CONTRACT) AT THE FACULTY OF DESIGN
The dean is responsible for both the academic and the administrative side
of the faculty and reports to the Principal regarding academic matters and
to the Director regarding financial and administrative matters. The dean
will have a strong influence on the academy’s development and will be a
member of the Principal’s management group.
The person who is employed as dean at the Faculty of Design is expected to
have academic visions and the will to motivate and involve their employees
so that the Academy's academic goals are reached at the faculty.
The dean should contribute to the promotion of research and academic
collaboration, facilitate cooperation with society and industry and
participate in promoting the academy externally by further developing
international contacts in networks and by means of exchange agreements.
At the moment the academy is undergoing an extensive restructuring process
connected to the physical merger in 2010. The deans will have a central
role in this work and should actively partake in the development of the
organisation with the intention of creating new opportunities for the
collected activities of the academy. It is expected that the person who is
appointed has the will to engage in demanding reorganisation processes.
The dean has a special duty regarding the efficient use of the faculty’s
total academic and financial resources by managing the quality assurance
of the training and by making sure that the department is administered in
accordance with the relevant laws, regulations and agreements, and by
taking care of the employer's responsibility at the faculty. A job
description for the position will be established.
The position requires that the applicant has higher education, and/or
relevant professional experience within design and art at high,
international level. In addition to the applicant’s academic competence,
emphasis will be placed on leadership skills, the ability to think
strategically, experience within research or development work as well as
financial administrative knowledge.
The person who is appointed must observe the laws, regulations,
instructions and agreements, which at all times apply to the position.
The appointment is a fixed-term contract of four years, with the
possibility of an additional period, following public notice.
The national labour force should reflect the composition of the population
to the greatest possible extent. It is therefore a political objective to
achieve a balance of age and gender and to recruit persons with an
immigrant background. Persons with an immigrant background are encouraged
to apply for the position. The person who is appointed is required to have
a good command of a Scandinavian language.
