Your image content shouldn't be very taxing at all for the hardware
you (and Markus) describe.
I'd imagine that a local X11 would be more successful than VNC as the
remote fslview will be able to use the display machines acceleration
(GLX provides OpenGL to remote X11 displays) while the VNC gives you
nothing more than the bundled acceleration.
Xming (MESA) is a free X11 for windows that'll do this. And you
wouldn't even need the NVidia driver for your server then :-)

The newest VMplayer has 3d acceleration but our down-loadable VM
doesn't support it. Duncan Mortimer (get his name right this time)
intends to update this as soon as he has the time. If you can't wait,
you can get VMware server and create a suitable VM of your own.
