I though some on this list would enjoy reading AMBIDEXTROUS, Stanford
University's Journal of Design <http://www.ambidextrousmag.org/>.
Our new Fall 2008 print issue #10 themed "Getting It On" just came out and
our website http://ambidextrousmag.org has some selected articles from this
and previous issues up.
AMBIDEXTROUS has been called a "quirky magazine [that] explores the craft of
design and the nuances of design thinking" (Dan Pink, in his book *A Whole
New Mind)*.
We like to say we feature the people and processes involved in design and
design thinking. It is a forum for a cross-disciplinary, cross-market
community of people with academic, professional or personal interest in
design. AMBIDEXTROUS exists to bring together this diverse design community
at Stanford, in the Bay Area, and beyond. It is a print magazine, curated
and edited by a team of Stanford students and recent grads with content by
writers and photographers from all over.
Past issues have been themed around the ideas of
Developing<http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/09/>(Spring 2008),
Secret <http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/08/> (Winter 2008),
Food<http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/07/>(Summer 2007), The
Future <http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/06/> (Spring 2007), Picking Things
Up <http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/05/> (Fall 2006),
Danger<http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/04/>(Summer 2006),
East <http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/03/> (Spring 2006), Borders &
Interfaces <http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/02/>(Winter 2005) and
Issue #1<http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/01/>(Summer 2005).
Our newest issue, themed Getting It On<http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/10/>,
originated in a proposition that we explore the topic of sex ("Let's Talk
About It" <http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/10/article.php?i10p8>). The
result is perhaps PG-13 at most, with topics such as MUJI designer Kenya
Hara ("Landscapes of the
Unknown"<http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/10/article.php?i10p34_37>),
fasteners and attachment ("Ups and Downs in Zipper
History"<http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/10/article.php?i10p19_21>),
and the power of emotions ("Free as in Love"). We also certainly
investigated titillating instances of explicit sexual material ("Sex Goes to
the Museum," <http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/10/article.php?i10p24_25>
"Getting
it On Gets Faster"<http://ambidextrousmag.org/issues/10/article.php?i10p17_18>
).
What also comes through the issue is a lust for design and design thinking
and a sweet affirmation and appreciation for those that do design. At heart
we're just romantics about design and the design process. And this has been
true for AMBIDEXTROUS from the start. The brown paper cover serves as a
demure disguise for our ongoing passionate love note written by and for
design geeks.
We have published 10 issues that contain thought-leader pieces, profiles,
and interviews with design community luminaries like David Kelley and Bill
Moggridge of IDEO, Paola Antonelli of MoMA, and Harmut Esslinger of
frogdesign and others. AMBIDEXTROUS is generously supported by the Stanford
d.school <http://dschool.stanford.edu> and the Stanford Center for Design
Research <http://cdr.stanford.edu>.
