Dear Michael,
If you are just getting started with SPM for EEG analysis we'd
recommend you to use SPM8b. It has quite good support for EGI and it's
the version we are presently interested to support. SPM5 for EEG works
quite robustly on several data types for which it was developed and
tested (primarily the data types used at the FIL), but it's quite a
pain to get it working for an external user. This is not the case for
SPM8b that was specifically developed to support multiple data types
in a generic way.
