Dear Colleagues
An approach that i have used is to assess individuals reports on the
group work. As the aim of most group projects is to enable students
to learn about the topic or process, a reflective report is a good
way to demonstrate understanding. Part of this could be a reflection
on the group processes, with suggestions for improvement.
It becomes quite clear when reading these reports, who understood
what was going on and who was along for the ride. It also enabled
strong students who had been selected as part of a week group to get
good marks. Conversely a week mstudent in a high performing group
would usually demonstrate that they did not fully understand what was
going on.
There are still flaws in this sytem, but to me it seems preferable
that the tutor makes the judgment rather than asking students to
report on their peers. I've not seen any work on the psychological
aspects of peer review, but it seems like a potentialy rich area.
