medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thank you so much for that, John, and so fast ...
I had a bit of trouble with the "Tiny" but the longer version worked OK and
I have printed off the page I need.
Goodness, it reads like a Press Release! (Not surprising, really) but one
bit bothered me:
Begins quote:
(The first obligation of Guy, [on taking up his appointment as Abbot of
Cherlieuin 1131] according to the Constitutions of the Order and in line
with church law, was to go and throw himself at the feet of the bishop [of
Besançon] in order to take an oath of allegiance to him, while receiving
from him the blessing required for his installation. ) My translation =
open to correction.
Ends quote.
I was under the impression that Cistercian Abbots (in the 12th century) were
NOT under the jurisdiction of the local bishop but owed allegiance only to
the Mother House (in this instance Clairvaux) and through the M/House, to
Citeaux. I thought it was only Benedictine houses that were under their
local bishop.
Is this a case of a 19th C cleric (book published in 1876) assuming that the
rules he is familiar with applied to all periods in the past?
I'm sure someone can clarify this one.
With yet more gratitude,
Brenda.
