Your serendipitous, idiosyncratic but somehow universal experience when
watching a couple of films. It seems a good way into appreciating style -
for finding ways of watching - and making - films
A few thoughts about one film seen through or by or with or in terms of
another or that are instructive about how to watch other films:
I remember seeing Mike Leigh's Vera Drake shortly after Far From Heaven and
Written on the Wind, and I saw it as a kind of Sirkean melodrama replacing
bright, rich colours with miserablist greys and browns. Maybe that's what
Mike Leigh has been on about all this time.
A terrific little essay/notes by Nicole Brenez on Lubitsch's Shop Around The
Corner and Abel Ferraras Go Go Tales shows how wild the possibilities of
this kind of watching can be.
Several films - The Grain and the Mullet (??right title), 4 months, 3 Weeks,
2 Days, Dardennes films - just remind me of one another. They share
stylistic features. They are unpanoramic, as a result terribly intriguing,
tense . I like the way they tell things (so do the Cannes judges - maybe
they are the 'Cannes-style')
Meanwhile I am curious to see Fugitive Pieces and Silent Light
