Is there any evidence base for its effectiveness in preventing macular
degeneration?
Or do its proponents have a blind spot about this?

Subject: Re: Lutein assay (see also Science or not?)
There are about 20 carotenoids in the diet, the majority of them good
antioxidants: lutein and zeaxanthin are photosynthetic accessory
pigments in the plant, concentrated in the retina in the human (the
"yellow spot") and so there is an interest in administration of these
substances to prevent macular degeneration.
Serum lutein, which can be measured with reasonable confidence, appears
to be the best marker of recent fresh vegetable ingestion, and that is
the reason we measure it. Quite a few other labs analyse it by the
method to which Ian Young refers.
