medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
i just came across a [reliable, but undocumented] reference
Jean Hubert, "Les prémisses de la Renaissance carolingienne au temps de
Pépin III," FRANCIA
II, 1974
http://mdzx.bib-bvb.de/francia/Blatt_bsb00016277,00065.html
telling me that nearly 200 monasteries were founded in "Gaul" during the 7th
century, and that Centula (St. Riquier) had 300 monks shortly after its
foundation in 790.
previously i had read the foundation charter of Charles the Bald for his
spiffy new collegial of St. Corneille of Compiegne, which says that there were
to be 100 monks there.
i found that number quite extraordinary, but the 300 guys at Centula puts Bald
Chuck's score to shame.
i am quite astonished by these numbers --which seem to be well documented--
and the enormous wealth, power and influence which they imply.
does anyone know of work which provides an overview of monasticism during this
period?
