On a slightly different note....but along the same lines....
Our lecturers here in Beds. have used two similar methods (Undergrad and Postgrad):
1. find a willing volunteer who has handed some draft work in and use the work as an example with the rest of the class highlighting good and bad practice
2. showing students suitable (nameless) examples from the previous year's cohort
From observation it appears that 1 is quite an effective method for discouraging some of the more simple forms of plagiarism which many of us encounter. But really as James says, it's about improving students skills.

On Sept 24 2008, Jon Appleton wrote... a somewhat more nuanced
position.
Unlike Jon, we would not prosecute a case based on a draft submission
even if there were evidence of intent.
If the evidence was rock solid (like you found the source on the
Internet) I would tell the student "If you hand that in you will fail".
But otherwise I have to keep quiet until the formal submission in order
to be able to gather enough evidence to make a successful case. Some
might argue that this amounts to entrapment, but if you say "I don't
think you did this work yourself", they will just try harder to hide
the evidence in the final version (which is all an academic conduct
officer will see).
That said, our position is the same as everyone else -- helping a
student to improve his or her draft is what we are here for!
