Hello everyone,
I would like to thank those colleagues who replied on and off the list to my question.
Some asked about my intentions behind posting this question and I must say that my
intention was merely informative. You see, I taught aviation medicine doctors how to use
concept maps. This was a short course, nothing big really, and part of a research project
that I am doing with some medical academics at the University of Otago in New Zealand.
So these question naturally developed from my interactions with these people outside our
field. I wondered how many designers are teaching non-designers.
Have we made the leap to teaching people in more traditional disciplines? Well, there are
designers teaching in schools of education, engineering, business, continuing and adult
education, and medicine.
In the following list I have not used information about the specific design programmes
that designers are running. I thought it was not appropriate to do so. This list is general
and answers my initial question:
1 graphic designer teaches in adult education programmes and in the community sector
1 designer teaches writers
2 designers teach in a school of education
1 industrial designer teaches in a faculty of engineering
1 designer teaches academic staff in a central university unit
1 non-designer with faculty training in design topics teaches people in the medical field
2 designers teach in a business school
1 designer teaches in a school of medicine
Most of these designers teach one or several courses in their respective departments and
a few others have a professorship or coordinating role. This was my perception from
interpreting the emails, I might be wrong.
This list has more than 1000 subscribers, so I was quite surprised by the few responses I
got. Now that I clarified my intentions I hope that we can continue this conversation on or
off the list. I found this information beneficial and very encouraging in relation to the
perspectives we have as designers in academia.
Cheers, Gloria
