Two postdocs Medieval Culture (0,8 fte each)
(Groningen), 32 hours per week University of Groningen
Job description
Two postdoc positions in Medieval Culture
at the ICOG for a period of four years (0,8 fte each).
The postdoc projects investigate the diffusion of vernacular Bible
translations in two European regions, i.e France (and or Spain) and
the Low Countries/Rhineland. The two positions are part of the
ERC-Starting Grant research project ‘Holy Writ and Lay Readers. A
Social History of Vernacular Bible Translations in the Late Middle
Ages’, funded by the European Research Council. The project
investigates the diffusion of vernacular Bible translations in late
medieval Europe. Main aim is to reconstruct the social context where
these translations were produced and circulated by using an
experimental research method which combines an extensive codicological
and bibliographical textual research with a socio-historical approach.
The central question will be addressed by focussing on the interaction
of social and cultural elements, such as a high degree of urbanisation
and susceptibility to the influence of religious movements which, as
preliminary research has shown, were strictly connected to the
diffusion of religious vernacular texts.
The postdocs will each concentrate on one of these two geographical
areas:
1) Low Countries and Rhineland
2) France and/or Spain.
The Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture is one of
the three official research institutes of the Faculty of Arts.
Research at ICOG represents many periods and disciplines: history and
theory of literature, film/TV, theatre, music, visual arts and
architecture, research in artistic media and in history and theory of
artistic policy-making and organisation, as well as journalism,
political, socio-economic, cultural and intellectual history and
international relations. Research at ICOG is characterised by its
interdisciplinary nature, which means that the research groups are
organised in such a way as to encourage links – both synchronic and
diachronic – between them.
