medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Jeffrey:
I would say: to a great extent. The cessation of blood sacrifice plays an important part in the arguments for supercession in Petrus Alfonsi (PL 157: around 665 but I didn't check this). The argument here runs something like this: The Jews celebrate a sacrificial meal, but without a sacrifice. They are somehow ignorant of the reason why: Alfonsi argues that it is because the true sacrafice, Christ, has replaced the sacrifice of old.
As for the temple, I was always struck by the importance of the destruction of the temple in Christian chronology. My impression mainly stems from readings of commentaries on the XII Prophets, mainly the Glossa ordinaria, echoing Jerome's commentaries. The argument there is clearly that it was seen as God's punishment for the Jews' crucifixion of Jesus. Jennifer Harris, of Toronto, who is preparing a book on the Temple, might have more on this.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
As part of my research into the perception of the synagogue among Ashkenazic Jews in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, I am interested in determining to what degree Christian claims of supercession were posed to the Jews based upon the destruction of the Temple and/or the cessation of blood sacrifice.
Any references will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
