medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Perhaps further reflection on my part--which, I grant, is always necessary--will lead me to the confidence that I can, gazing down from the heights of our sophisticated world, make magisterial connections between the Middle Ages and "people today," whoever they may be. (Presumably, they are not very bright and sophisticated--certainly not part of the Academy-- for they are religious.) Perhaps they are not only stuck in mud but also covered in it. The thing is, I think that History, indeed Humanistic Scholarship, is probably to be found more in the mud than in the clean, sparkling ivory tower of generous, tolerant, liberal, and progressive academia. I've always thought that the study of history taught humility, a humility that comes from recognizing the chasm of time and circumstance between the lives of those we study--or try to--and our own, often not very well understood either. But I see thngs differently. That is clear. While I often disagree with the political and religious views of others, it has never occurred to me that I should belittle them, especially in a format that was supposedly devoted to scholarly exchange. It is apparent to me that this forum no longer serves a scholarly purpose. If, at some point, private views are kept just that and serious discussion about medieval religion ever surfaces, I'd like to hear about it. Please remove me from the list. Bruce C. Brasington

Because people in the Middle Ages often behaved in similar fashion to people today, thus, one can see various events of the period in light of peoples use
of religion as a justification for various world views and conflicts.
