Andrew will be pleased to note that the following ICA conference (2011)
will be in Paris - certainly close to the action! Location is based on
submitted bids and often there is no choice. There were no competing
bids for Moscow (2007) or Chile. Dresden also bid for 2011 & lost by 2
votes.
Having looked a bidding for the ICA conference to come to the UK again
in the near future, the UKCC decided against it as conference facilities
in UK are too costly to run the kind of conference required for a
reasonable registration fee unless there is a major sponsor.
ICA Commissions are more likely to meet in less exotic places & be much
cheaper. The Commission on Use & User Issues met in Vienna in Feb and
meets in Salzburg in November. There is no charge for these one day
meetings.
The Austrians do seem good at running cheap meetings. An ICA 2 day
workshop on Art & Cartography in Feb was ~100 Euros (free for speakers)
and the LBS2008 conference in November is 200 Euros for 3 days (free for
speakers also).
