Hello,
We've had digitised listed buildings data here in Leicestershire for a
long time, but only fairly recently as part of the HER (before that it
was in our historic buildings team's database). The data we've now
inherited seems to have been drawn using the listed building description
to identify the building. I have been gradually checking these as part
of my overall data cleaning and some are wrong - I've been using the
English Heritage dataset (which is just points), the 'Images of England'
website (looking at the photos!) and historic maps (like the 1st
edition) to check the right buildings are digitised. We haven't got
curtilages digitised - not sure how you'd do that since it seems to be a
bit of a matter of opinion...
From a bunch of people who've been through this process of incorporation
into the HER, I'd say that our historic buildings dataset was a lot more
useful than the English Heritage dataset, mainly because it's polygons
rather than just points. I don't think it's a good idea to try and map
curtilages though. And a checking process using the EH data and things
like 'Images of England' should tidy up any errors.
The other aspect, I suppose, is that presumably you'll need to import
all the listed buildings descriptions into the HER and join them up to
the mapping. I have to admit I'm not completely clear how this was
done! But we did receive a copy of all the listed buildings
descriptions from EH on CD a while ago - basically it just needs a
common reference between that data and the mapped objects so they can be
stuck together.
If you think I might be able to help with anything then do feel free to
contact me directly, I can ask our IT person if it's something that I
don't know. A lot of the incorporation work was done by ExeGesIS.
