Medical Statistician

The Centre for Statistics in Medicine in Oxford
(Director: Professor Doug Altman;
www.csm-oxford.org.uk) carries out collaborative
medical research projects, a methodological
research programme, and teaching. Members of the
Centre have a particular interest in randomised
controlled trials and prognostic studies. The
Centre currently employs 12 statisticians and
other researchers and is part of the University
Department of Clinical Pharmacology. The Centre
is located in an attractive site at Wolfson College in North Oxford.
Applications are invited for a medical
statistician to provide statistical input to the
research programme of the Oxford Experimental
Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC), led by Professor
Adrian Harris. The successful applicant will
collaborate on clinical research projects and
programmes with ECMC researchers. Those studies
are likely to include early studies of
investigational drugs or biomarkers. The
statistician will also provide general
statistical support within the ECMC research
programme. They may also participate in applied
statistics research and contribute to the CSM's teaching programme.
Applicants should ideally have a good (first or
upper second) first degree (preferably with a
large statistical component) and a postgraduate
qualification in medical statistics (or a closely
related subject). They should preferably have
experience working as a medical statistician.
Applicants should be fluent in key aspects of
study design and analysis, particularly applied
to randomised clinical trials, and be aware of
the latest statistical techniques. Experience in
the use of statistical packages is essential
together with good verbal and written
communication skills, including the ability to
explain complex statistical issues to non-statisticians.
The appointment will be for two years in the
first instance. Salary will be in the range
£28,313 - £37,326 per annum depending on
qualifications and experience (Agenda for Change
Band 7). The post is available immediately.
