Well the local population estimates (see neighbourhood statistics) are based on updating census by birth and death records plus GP registrations. There are independent figures also on neighbourhood stats from child benefit figures. For each, the available age-groups are broader than one would wish for this purpose.

Subject: Fwd: Reminders for routine childhood vaccinations?
Alison,
Thank you very much for the information. (I intended just to say thanks by email but the email was bounced back).
I wonder how easy it is to check the total numbers of children used as the denominators in the vaccination uptake statistics, if I have time I'll ask the local PCT.
My local GP surgery are checking their children's records themselves now. (I'd offer to do it for a surgery, or sample if confidentiality and practicalities would allow!).
Rachel

Appointments and reminders for childhood immunisations are held on child health computer systems managed by primary care trusts. Some PCTs are moving to new systems which do not work as well as the old systems set up in the 1980s earlier. The most notorious situation is in North East London where nine PCTs were moved from a working system RICHS to a dysfunctional interim system while waiting to move again onto the final new system RiO. IF PCTs are having problems producing statistics, this means they are also likely to be having problems issuing appointments and reminders. See the reports from the Health Protection Agency
