I would like you draw your attention on a small video-sketching exercise we are proposing for a workshop on user-driven innovation. The workshop is part of the LUDINNO workshop, funded by the Nordic Innovation Centre.
The workshop is for the students of Industrial Design, experience design and interaction design at Aalborg University, and for the students of occupational therapy at the University College Nordjylland.
Video Sketching is a very effettive technique to support communication between designers and customers during the concept development process, rather than at the end. Here videos are used instead of paper and pencil sketches, to give customers and clients a clearer idea of the concept to develop. This technique may prove particularly useful in service design and in any cases in which users are involved in the co-production of value.
In this workshop students are not allowed to use paper and pencil. They can also describe their own ideas by acting them and recording on videos, using basic techniques and objects they have at hand.
Videos sketches are also used for testing hypothesis and simulating behaviours. (e.g. testing different sensorial signals for fire escape)
Different techniques have been used in the workshop, from stop motion to chroma-key.
Video Sketches of the workshop can be seen at the LUDINNO wiki (http://ludinno.wikispaces.com/VIdeo+Sketches).
In the next and final week, the students will work on the definition of the concept and on an adequate representation through video sketches.
I suppose other people in this list are working on this topic, certainly more expert than me in the use of this technique.
Any comment to the students is more than welcome and can help them improving their project.
Thanks
Nicola
