That's Volume II, page xcviii in the 2nd edition of 1882, which most of us
have :-)

p. lxxxix, n.31 of the 1882 edition. Perhaps I should apologise for having
failed to spot that - I had skimmed through the volume, but obviously failed
to read the "Preliminary Dissertation"! Could I also might animadvert on
Google Books? It seems horribly unreliable: in quite a lot of cases an
ordinary Google search will pull up a passage like this, in other cases
(such as this one) you have to do the search on Google Books itself.
