Religion is prescriptive when it instructs, compels, or enforces whatwe ought to do as gendered, embodied, sexual beings. Thinking aboutthese linked dimensions of religion is particularly helpful when weare trying to understand human rights issues within the context ofreligion, gender and sexuality because they interrupt our tendency tooversimplify or misunderstand the role of religion in human rightsissues.
