CIÊNCIA2008 – CMUP/FCUP - STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND APPLICATIONS
JOB SUMMARY

The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) invites
applications for two 5-years research positions, in STATISTICAL ANALYSIS
AND APPLICATIONS, in particular in Statistical Computation, Signal and
Data Analysis. The successful candidates will develop their research
activities at the Centre of Mathematics of the University of Porto
(CMUP).

JOB DESCRIPTION
The research positions are aimed at developing research in Statistical
Analysis and Applications, attending substantive applications in diverse
fields. The appointments at FCUP ( http://www.fc.up.pt ) will be made
for up to five years, renewed yearly. The positions will be held at CMUP
( http://www.fc.up.pt/cmup/).
The researchers should have a strong interdisciplinary background with
interests in Applied Mathematics. They are expected to develop research
within the existing related areas and working case studies at CMUP
( Signal Processing and Data Analysis and Numerical Analysis,
Probability and Statistics ) through novel, computational approaches and
tools for the analysis of complex data and signals, such as those
arising from the health and biological sciences, engineering, economics
and finance.
In addition to their research work, the successful candidates are
expected to:
-participate in the supervision of PhD/Master thesis and lecture on the
area FCUP post-graduate programs;
-participate in CMUP seminars, promoting regular group seminars and
organizing advanced lecture series;
-participate in the organization of national/international workshops and
conferences;
-collaborate in the establishment of targeted research programs in
networking frameworks, ongoing activities to promote the public
awareness of science and specialized consultancy.
The contractual conditions are in accordance with the Programme
Ciência2008

These include a base salary equivalent to index 195 of the Portuguese
research career (approximately 42500€ year, before taxes). The
appointment of successful candidates is subject to final approval by FCT
– “Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia “.
APPLICATIONS
Candidates must have a PhD in Applied Mathematics or related, and
relevant postdoctoral research experience (in general at least 3 years;
this requirement may be waived for exceptional candidates). The
conditions for the acceptance of applications follow the general rules
of Ciência2008

In support of their application, candidates must also provide (all

- Motivation letter, mentioning earliest possible starting date, email
and an address for correspondence;
- Curriculum Vitae;
- A 5-year Research Proposal (maximum 2A4 pages), emphasizing research
objectives, collaborations and expected contributions to Statistical
Analysis and Applications at CMUP;
- 2 letters of recommendation.
The selection procedure may include an interview and a presentation
seminar at CMUP.
