The Department of Primary Health Care at the University of Oxford is
seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to lead a research team as part
of the new Oxford Centre for Monitoring and Diagnosis in Primary Care
(MaDOx). This is an exciting new research programme funded by the
National Institute for Health Research which has been set up in order to
improve the techniques and equipment that GPs use to diagnose clinical
conditions in GP surgeries and other NHS primary care settings.
One of the main components of the MaDOx Centre is to develop a
programme of horizon scanning to identify, prioritise and assess the
impact of new diagnostic health technologies relevant to primary care.

the horizon scanning programme. This will involve coordinating the
process of horizon scanning and producing reports of identified
technologies in the priority disease areas. The work team will initially
be focussed on four main clinical areas: cardiovascular disease
(including diabetes), cancer, infection and child health. The postholder
will also contribute to the dissemination of research findings via peer
reviewed publications and presentations at national conferences. The RA
will need to work in collaboration with Departments of Primary Health
Care, Engineering Science, and Health Economics and a dedicated
Information Specialist at Oxford University, together with the
Department of Primary Care and the National Horizon Scanning Centre at
Birmingham University, as well as other national organisations such as
the HTA.
The successful applicant will possess the abilities to write up results
of analyses and contribute to peer-reviewed papers and reports for
sponsors, work to tight deadlines, manage and prioritise their own
workload, and develop new skills where needed (e.g. in systematic
reviews). Excellent interpersonal and highly developed IT skills are
also important for this position.
The post is available full-time for three years in the first instance.
