All are welcome to an 'Evening Discussion Meeting - "Policing Library
Users - Ethics & Practice" at CILIP HQ, Ridgmount Street on 8th October
2008.
*Speakers:*
*John Pateman* – Head of Libraries, Learning and Inclusion, Lincolnshire
County Council
*William Marsterson* - Pro Vice-Chancellor, Director of Learning
Resources and University Librarian Sheppard Library Middlesex University
*Stephen Bury* - Head of European and American collections at the
British Library
This event has been organised by CILIP Information Services Group
(London & South East) and CILIP Universities College and Research Group
(London) in response to concerns among librarians in both public and
academic libraries that libraries may be enlisted to police library
users suspected of involvement in terrorism. The Museums, Libraries and
Archives Council (MLA) produced draft guidelines on the management of
controversial material in public libraries in response to the Prime
Minister's statement on National Security last November. One of the
suggestions is that libraries should censor their own collections
removing material likely to be of use to terrorists. Also, should we be
monitoring what users are looking at on the internet, and how can
libraries do this? As David Glover, Chairman of UCR London points out,
information on many banned organisations might well be vital for
research purposes and so that people can find out for themselves what
these groups represent.
The evening will begin with refreshments from 5.30pm to 6pm, followed by
talks from our speakers for the evening. Afterwards there will be a
general discussion and the meeting is due to end by 8pm.
There is no charge for the event. Please email Vicky Robertson
[log in to unmask] or telephone her on 020 7753 5833 if you
would like to come so we have an idea of numbers for catering. Please
also just drop in if it is a last minute decision!
Best wishes, Anne
