medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear learned colleagues,
Do any of you happen to know how this feast (still called Maria ad Nives) got into the Sarum calendar and Sanctorale, at least in the printed versions of the Sarum breviary, in the late fifteenth century? If the information in John's "saints of the day" posting for August 5 is accurate, it wasn't part of the general Roman calendar until 1568; was there some specific connection between Santa Maria Maggiore and the English church (or the English province of Canterbury in particular) that might explain its relatively early adoption in England?
